In exchange, the town would downzone 58 acres of company property farther to the west and behind the Palisades escarpment. The money-the company has since suggested $250,000 -would then be donated by the park commission to the Town of Clarkstown for civic purposes. Rockefeller, president of the commission, announced a tentative agreement with the Martin‐Marietta Corporation, whose Appalachian Stone division is doing the quarrying here, whereby the company would deed to the park commission the 90‐acre section of the Palisades that it owns and also give the cornmission an amount of money to he determined after appraisal. To some conservationists, the “bad guys” are quarrymen who, they say, are in the same role they played 35 years ago in Maxwell Anderson's Broadway play, “High Tor,” and earlier when destruction of the scenic cliffs led to the founding of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission at the turn of the century.

Y.-The last major privately owned stretch of New York‐New Jersey Palisades overlooking the Hudson River here is involved in a proposed threeway swap that has stirred the opposition of conservationists and evoked the name of the peak, High Tor, a cherished landmark.
